WELCOME TO HAITI OUTREACH MISSION

Our Mission

HAITI OUTREACH MISSION was started by someone FROM Haiti FOR Haiti. It is a 501 (c)(3) organization committed to helping the people of Haiti, focusing its support to those in and around Mirebalais.  With support from several churches and individuals in the southeastern Michigan area and Billings, MT, HOM is able to provide financial support to the people of Haiti on a MONTHLY basis.

Life in Haiti is hard! Gangs terrorize the communities and leave destruction in their path.  The money HOM is able to provide translates to food, shelter, education for the children and medical care, especially for the children.

On a yearly basis, HOM has provided thousands of meals and clean drinking water. Additionally, it has provided medical/dental care for all who sought it at the St. Pierre Medical/Dental Clinic HOM established. Furthermore, children at the St. Louis and St. Pierre schools received daily meals from HOM - often the only meal they would receive that day,

In March of 2025 the gangs invaded Mirebalais. The residents had to flee, leaving everything behind, and now reside anywhere they can find a place, including in schools. Our contacts on the ground reached out to HOM and we are still able to provide for humanitarian needs of the people, which are now greater than ever.

Please peruse our website to see what we have accomplished in Haiti.  We encourage you to view our PHOTO GALLERY to see the various projects we have undertaken in the past. Hopefully you will be inspired to help. The HOM Executive Committee works to be good stewards of your donations, keeping overhead to an absolute minimum.  Thank you for visiting!

Who We Are

Founded By Someone From Haiti For Haiti

  • HOM is an ecumenical lay mission group with primary support from Catholic and Episcopal churches located mainly in Southeast Michigan.
  • HOM started in 1998 following the marriage of Dr. Dominique Monde (in photo above) and Roger Matthews. As they waited at the airport to return to the U.S. from their honeymoon in her homeland of Haiti, Roger remarked, "There must be something we can do." Because the need was evident, Haiti Outreach Mission (HOM) was formed.
  • Dominique and Roger went to their respective Catholic and Episcopal parishes in metro Detroit, and they provided assistance by contributing annual seed money.
  • Other parishes eventually partnered with HOM. They also provide annual seed money and organize fundraisers. See list of partner churches on the CONTACT US page.
  • The seed money from our partner parishes, money generated from fundraisers and donations which flow in from people in the community allow HOM to continue the work of serving some of the poorest people on earth.

How We Help

The core missions of Haiti Outreach Mission have been to support a medical clinic and programs for the common good for the people of Mirebalais, to improve their lives. Additionally, HOM provided funds to aid people who came to Mirebalais, fleeing the chaos in other places in Haiti. Since 1998 HOM has provided over $1,750,000 in direct aid to the people of Haiti. Funds are sent MONTHLY to our contacts in Haiti.

The HOM Executive Committee diligently works to be responsible stewards of donated funds, spending the absolute minimum on overhead.

The pie chart shows how HOM has spent its funds over the past five years – from July 1, 2020 through September 30, 2025.

  • HOM’s funding priorities underwent a profound shift on March 31, 2025 when the gangs invaded Mirebalais. The townspeople fled the city, abandoning the clinic and closing the schools.
  • From April of 2025 until the present, HOM has sent, and continues to send, money to support the displaced people from Mirebalais.
  • Spending on HEALTH CARE accounts for more than half of the funds spent over the past five years.  The health care funds paid the salaries of the clinic staff and paid for  medicines and other medical supplies.
    • HOM has not sent funds specifically to support the clinic since the gangs invaded Mirebalais as there is no access to the clinic at this time. However, HOM has provided funds for mobile medical       clinics to serve the individuals displaced from Mirebalais.
  • HUMANITARIAN AID was and continues to be sent to provide food and shelter for people from Mirebalais. Most of these funds were sent in response to the increased number of people seeking refuge from the chaos that has engulfed Port au Prince.
    • When the people of Mirebalais fled the town following the gang invasion, they literally left with only the clothes on their backs. Since that time emergency relief has provided for food and shelter for as many of these displaced people as we are able.
    • A small portion of these funds has been sent to purchase medicine so the medical staff from the clinic could utilize their skills on behalf of the refugees.
  • HOM has supported EDUCATION for the children at the St. Pierre School and the St. Louis School. The donated funds were used to buy desks, books and pay some of the teacher’s salaries.
  • ELECTRICAL POWER PROJECTS of HOM included funding the purchase of a new transformer. In 2020 and 2021 funds were sent for generator maintenance, to purchase a new diesel generator and to build a new room to house it at the clinic.
  • HOM provided SOLAR POWER to key facilities, such as the clinic, which has allowed for more consistent service to the locals. Furthermore, HOM replaced a system at the St. Pierre rectory. The power provided by the national power company is unreliable at best. These systems provided power regardless of the status of the national system and the cost/ availability of diesel fuel.
  • The WATER PURIFICATION SYSTEM was maintained through funding from HOM. This allowed for a contractor to replace pumps, ultraviolet lamps and reverse osmosis filters, which are expensive components of the system.

As noted above, the HOM Executive Committee works hard to keep EXPENSES to a minimum, allowing for more money to help the people of Haiti. At the present time these expenses include the following: Harness donation platform, web hosting, bank fees including wire transfers of funds to Haiti and accounting fees. Click on the WHAT WE DO tab at the top of the page (or in the Menu on a mobile device) for an impressive list of our accomplishments.

CURRENT NEWS

08/11/2025

Unfortunately, the gang activity in Haiti has made it impossible to safely travel there for mission trips. In March of 2025 the gangs attacked the city of Mirebalais, where HOM had previously concentrated its aid. The residents had to flee, leaving everything behind.

Because everything was left behind, the need is greater than ever. We remain in contact with the local priests who used (and continue to use) HOM funds to provide for the people in their community on a MONTHLY basis. We have continued to provide humanitarian aid so the displaced people of Mirebalais can have food (see photo above), shelter and education for their children. Your donation helps now more than ever.
